Breitling Navitimer B02 Chronograph 41 Honors Scott Carpenter Centenary



It’s no secret that the Omega Speedmaster was the first watch to land on the moon, but the first Swiss watch to actually make it to space was a few years earlier: the Breitling Navitimer. Although it’s not just any Navitimer, it was a custom watch made at the request of astronaut Scott Carpenter and specially modified for orbital flight. Known as the Navitimer Cosmonaute, it has been a staple in the Navitimer collection for many years. On the occasion of Scott Carpenter’s 100th birthday, Breitling is honoring his watchmaking legend with the Navitimer B02 Chronograph 41 Cosmonaute Scott Carpenter Centenary.

The most striking thing about the Cosmonaute is that it’s designed specifically for space travel. Instead of a 12-hour clock (which indicated day or night based on the position of the sun in the sky), it uses a 24-hour clock, which allows it to sync time with ground control without relying on the sun. After all, in orbit, the day-night cycle takes about 90 minutes, and it's easy to lose track of the date.

Other changes include a wider bezel and a more pronounced grip to allow for use while wearing thick spacesuit gloves. For similar reasons, its traditional bracelet is made of flexible metal so that it can be worn over a spacesuit. Since the Astronaut Scott Carpenter Centennial Watch is positioned as a ground watch, they swapped its super-practical bracelet for a more luxurious blue alligator leather strap to match the blue sunray brushed dial.
